Zoila Vela

Zoila is from the State of Coahuila and moved to Texas 14 years ago. She attended St. Thomas University in Houston, Texas and is now going on her third year as an EISD Bilingual Kindergarten teacher. "I'm very proud to be a part of the Bilingual program here in Edgewood and all the work they are doing for our bilingual students. In all the districts that I have taught in, this is the best one. It's full of real principals and real teachers who are truly concerned about making our students better. Everybody tries to help each other and there is great teamwork."

Zoila works toward bettering the lives of her students every day, teaching them that they can achieve anything through hard work.

"When I was younger, I was a low-working student. I remember my teacher saying it's not about being the smartest student, it's about hard work. I try to teach my students every day. If you work hard and advocate to study, you are going to get it done. That's why I love what I do. My "why" is to help the ones that struggled like me. I always say, 'el trabajo esmerado constante logra cual quier cosa.'"

Zoila's dedication to her students has earned her the honorable title of Teacher of the Year. A title that makes her very proud and excited for what's to come.

"It was so surprising. I really think that we have wonderful teachers on this campus and I would never imagine that I would get teacher of the year. It's just an honor to represent my school and I'm so excited."
